These sponges are sustainably harvested from the Gulf of Mexico and the Bahamas. Wondering what "sustainably farmed" means? Sponges are harvested by divers who trim rather than pull out the sponges. Sponges actually possess the ability to regenerate so when sea sponges are harvested, the divers leave a bit of sponge at the base thus ensuring it will grow back. Since the sponge divers' business thrives on the regeneration of sponges and them growing as fast as possible, they are very careful in their practices to ensure they are protecting the future of the sponge bed. They also regulate how much sponge is harvested to ensure regrowth.
